Review Question

Question: Why are these types of animal swing not used in playgrounds accessible to the public?

View Answer

Hard plastic swings can cause severe injuries if they impact a child while in motion.

Correction

Swings made of wood, metal or hard plastic are not used, as they may cause “battering” injuries to a child who is hit by them.

Additional Guidelines and Recommendations

  • To minimize the likelihood of children being struck by a moving swing, no more than two swings are hung in a bay.
  • Swings are not attached to a composite structure.
  • Swing seats are designed to accommodate one person, and must be used accordingly.
  • Full bucket seats are recommended for children under 4 years old, and seat materials must not present a strangling hazard for young children (e.g. no rope or chain used as part of the seat).
  • Bucket seats are hung in bays separate from other swings and play equipment.
  • Bucket seat pivot points are 47-96 inches above the protective surfacing.
