Walkways, Surfaces & Structures Walkthrough

An important aspect of preparing the farm site for agritourism is to ensure that visitors have a clear, level and unobstructed surface for exploring. Whether you have pathways to guide the guests from one attraction to the next, or if you allow guests to freely roam around the farm, there are several strategies that can be used to reduce the risk of trips, falls and potential injury.

The entrances to buildings and structures can also present hazards, if the transition from outside to inside isn’t smooth. Secure storage areas can be very important when visitors, especially children, are present on the farm. Keeping these storage areas locked helps ensure that items necessary to the farm operation, such as farm equipment, tools and chemicals do not become a safety hazard for children.

The “walkthrough” that follows will encompass some safety guidelines for walkways and structures, and also provide links to useful resources.

A "Walkthrough" refers to "walking through" or looking through a series of pictures, and deciding if they show hazards and/or safety items, or if safety items are lacking. After evaluating the pictures and giving an answer, a correction will appear with additional guidelines, recommendations and resources.
